Overview
VoltPoint CarPlay is a concept UI design for an EV charging experience integrated into Apple CarPlay. The challenge: design something glanceable, driver-safe and clearly communicating charging status, time and cost — within Apple's strict Human Interface Guidelines for in-vehicle use.
Design Challenge
CarPlay interfaces must work within strict Apple HIG constraints while being glanceable and driver-safe. Every interaction needs to work with a single tap — no complex navigation, no small touch targets, no information overload.
I designed the core flow around three states: find a charger nearby, start the session, and monitor progress. Large type, high contrast and minimal chrome keep the driver's attention where it belongs — on the road.
Interaction Design
The flow is intentionally minimal: 3 screens to complete the full charging journey. Each screen communicates one primary piece of information. Secondary information is present but visually subordinate — available at a glance without demanding attention.
Design Principles Applied
- Driver-safe: single primary action per screen, no nested navigation
- Glanceable: primary information readable in under 2 seconds
- HIG-compliant: CarPlay-specific component and spacing constraints respected
- High contrast: legible in all lighting conditions including direct sunlight
